Cropping using the ‘hide’ option

  • Hey there fellow Photoshoppians, today I’ve got a video on cropping and using the ‘hide’ option in the options bar. I’ve received a good handful of emails from subscribers who mentioned that their ‘hide’ option was greyed out and they couldn’t select it.

    In this video I cover exactly how to overcome that and why using the hide option when cropping can be a good option. It’s great if you know that you’re going to be coming back to the image and likely to want to change your crop! It becomes a pain if you’ve cropped your image and deleted the parts of the image that were cropped out, but this is the solution! :)

    Hi Shane – that was really interesting about cropping and something I never knew. However, when I went to Photoshop to experiment for myself, I didn´t have the ´hide´option. So I went back to your email to watch it again but the video had disappeared! So 2 questions – how do I see the ´hide´tool and what happened to your video?

      Hey Judith, just hit ‘REFRESH’ on the page and the video should be there. We haven’t removed it etc. I think the video will clear up your other question.
      Cheers
      Shane

      Hi Shane – yes all OK – I´ve got the video back now. Thanks. But….I still can´t get the ´hide´icon. It isn´t greyed out it just isn´t there at all. But neither is the box which in your video shows ´crop guide overlay´. How do I get these boxes up. I´m using CS4. Judith

        Judith, have you selected the crop tool? You have to select it from the tool palette for the options to show up.

    Thank you for a most helpful tip. This way “no regrets” and I can always get the background back if I need it. Cna you explain the resizing thing..what do Bicubic and the other options do, and when do you use what?

    Hey yourself, Amazing what you can show us. I have seen the crop screen 100s of times and never noticed the hide/ crop box. Thanks for opening my eyes.

    That was most helpful, and much easier than what I used to do – make a full copy and save it with a different name, and then use a duplicate image to crop! And the advice about the size of image is excellent, especially when going on to print the photo!
    Keep it coming, good man!

    The resizing first to get the exact photo I wanted was very helpful. Thank you, I had no idea. :}

      Hey Vicky, it’s just a good idea to do it that way so you’re not using an incorrect interpolation method (you can set it in the Preferences the default one you want e.g. Bicubic Smoother or Sharpener depending if you’re mainly enlarging or reducing the size when cropping.

    Thanks, Shane. I sometimes wish I hadn’t cropped as much as I had and this will save going back.

    Thanks Shane, read about Crop/Hide the other day, now you’ve explained it nicely.
    Regards Tony.
