I have a Gateway PC,and 2 Dell Laptops. One with windows and the new one with Vista. The only problem I have is I replaced my CD rom on my Gateway and I am having trouble making the PC find it.

I have both PC and MAC. I have had PC much longer and am more comfortable with a PC. I am trying to switch over ever so slowly to MAC. The problem is I have too much money invested in PC software and My Photoshop is PC version, so that keeps me with PC more. When more software becomes as plentiful as it is on the PC, I hope to go totally MAC. But for the forseeable future, I will be doing my photo work on PC

Call Adobe and ask them for a “Platform switch disk”. You have to promise to distroy your Old “PC” disk and it costs $6.00 for postage for the new MAC disk.

Everybody told me that a MAC was the best way to go but they never gave me a good reason. Well, I finally broke down and bought me a MAC OS about two months ago. Now I understand what they were talking about. I have a VISTA sitting right next to it but when I need something quickly, guess what I use? Yes, you are right: the MAC.

I have been a faithful PC user for as long as I can remember – 30 years?
Last month I gave in and bought a 2 new 24″IMacs for my husband and me. I love my Mac.
I am using both PC and Mac at this point.

I got my iMac 24 4 days ago, and am still getting familiar with it. But compared to my PC it is like driving a Jaguar rather than a Ford! The graphics are so good, very user friendly, and loaded with ideas! But the sad part – I cannot use my Photoshop 7, and I don’t know which one to get. Can you help? It is my hobby, not a professional need, so I cannot justify spending hundreds of dollars! Would Elements be a good compromise?
April 7, 2009 9:17 pm
You are soooo right… it’s been 8 years for me, and it just keeps getting better and better. Every time I need to touch a pc I’m reminded of how lucky I am to have Macs.

Well, this ole gal has been in graphics and photography for over 35 years, since the time before desktop. Totally self taught and working in nearly every graphics and photo editing program since my first PC in about ’88. MANY, MANY PCs later…including custom built ones, Dells, HPs, Toshiba, and Sonys, I now have a Dell desktop, a Toshiba laptop and a Dell XPS 2010 (monster) laptop. I always stayed with the open architecture of the PCs for cost reasons. The XPS has two hard drives and two Operating Systems… Vista and XP Pro. AND FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE… I WANT TO SELL THEM ALL AND GET A NICE APPLE. Its not that I dislike PCs anymore – I just am sick of Microsoft. My system(s)are so busy defragging, updating, cleaning, scanning for virus, etc there isn’t much time or space for WORKING. Frustrating! Also for Dell..there are some background conflicts.. and (pretty)VISTA totally sucks. On the Vista side of my XPS.. the sound and the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse conflict with the set up on the XP side… sigh.. and the BluRay disk player does not play BluRay disks! Arrrggghhh! These are known Dell problems. Dell and I are still workin’ on it! Yea… my next ‘puter will definitely be an Apple!

i have had both in laptops up to last week and i found that the mac was less user frendly than tue pc so i got rid of the mac and plan to buy a new pc lap top next week

I have a PC and do not have any major problems with it. I like what I have seen of the Macs, especially interested in a Mac laptop. Just can’t afford it now.

I am an enthusiastic amateur photographer and used a PC (and notebook) for many years (having graduated from the Commodores (Vic20, 64, SX64 and Amiga)). I really enjoyed putting my photos into videos/DVD and used a great product called Picture-To-TV.
Finally, however, Windows wore me down. My XP based tower had a myriad of problems that the specialists couldn’t diagnose and everytime I started my HP notebook the Vista Operating System wanted to take 30-40 minutes to update itself and then the virus checker wanted another 30 minutes to do it’s thing.
I bought a 24″ iMac with iLife08 and iWork08. Life was suddenly very good.
I bought iLife09 and iWork09 and FinalCut Express and life was better.I recently bought CS3 Design Standard (got it cheap) and life was better still.
I bought a new MacBook last weekend (in preparation for an overseas photo trip) and life (iLife?) is wonderful.
I miss Picture-To-TV a little but the compensations are such that I cannot ever see myself returning to the PC.
I have a Windows emulator for the Mac but can’t bring myself to install it.

I use a PC that has an AMD Processor. In my experience, the harder you work the AMD, the better it runs Photoshop. I had an Intel and it didn’t like Photoshop, it slowed down to the point where I had to restart my machine. I will say that I have recently bought an Apple IPhone and it is Amazing !! It’s making me think about purchasing a Mac.
April 7, 2009 6:47 pm
hi guys,
well my son (who happens to be I.T Freelance Trainer of the year 2008) taked me into having a mac and i now have an eMac (called englebert!!! don’t ask!)
I love it but what i do find frustrating is that a lot of the ‘free’ software attached to photography magazines etc isn’t compatible with a Mac!!
I also have a laptop which is a pc and oh dear do i get confused!!!
Love my Mac tho and long live englebert cos i couldn’t afford a new one!!!
have a great day! Blue xx

PCs are the ONLY universally accepted computer. There is nothing that happens to PCs that cannot be put down to operator or purchasing error. I do not, and never have, known anyone who uses Macs other than a printer, and they changed to PCs.
April 7, 2009 6:31 pm
Well I would love to try a Mac, but unfortunately they are a little too expensive for me. I have mucked around on one at the stores and I am impressed with what they have to offer with respect to the installed applications and graphics. One day I will get one and I might be converted.. Till then I will hold judgement for a later date.
April 7, 2009 6:29 pm
I can never afford a mac,but I use it another studio. I use a PC at this time but in the future I will…, so please, give me PC tips!
April 7, 2009 6:02 pm
iMac for my Audio/Digita room and macbook pro for everyday use…I just started using Mac system less than 2 years ago…now I forgot how to use Windoze at all…Mac system is the best for me..

MAC convert! 2 years ago I made the switch after years on PC.
It was a seamless transfer with the help of the Genius Bar at the local Apple Shop.
Going to the One to One lessons for next to nothing here in the UK has opened my eyes to all the possibilities the Mac can offer.
Since i made the switch i managed to convince 8 people to switch to Mac, and they are equally delighted.
Working on a MacBook Pro, with CS2 and Aperture2 and I’m more than happy
April 7, 2009 6:00 pm
Mac. Definitely. No contest.
(1) Cost is not much more – but in any event you get what you pay for.
(2) Software compatibility arguments are moot. You can put Windows on a Mac to run Windows programs – but why would you want to??? You can’t put OSX on a PC.
(3) Cost again… Resale on Mac’s is heaps better. I recently sold a G5 20″ iMac for $850.00. Try getting that for a 6 year old PC!!
(4) Viruses? What are they? What is this stuff they call virus scanners? Firewalls? Spyware? Don’t need that shit on my Mac. Gee, wouldn’t that slow the system down???
(5) Don’t get me started….
April 7, 2009 5:47 pm
I have a mac and I will never go back to a pc.
April 7, 2009 5:46 pm
Every time I use a PC I wonder why anyone actually chooses to use Windows. Okay if that’s what you are given but to make a conscious decision to buy one, wow! That’s beyond my comprehension.
100% Mac since the days PC users were still banging rocks together and windows were holes in the wall covered in glass.
April 7, 2009 5:45 pm
Like most individuals I have always used PC’s purely based on costs. It doesn’t matter how good Mac’s are if you can’t afford to buy one.
New duel/quad PC’s and 64 bit archetecture are making PC’s faster and I think for most individuals a PC is good enough
for most applications.
Mac’s will not compete on the individual market until they are more competitively priced.

I have used Macs since 1989 and currently own a Mac G4 Laptop and a 20 inch screen Desktop iMac. I have seven Desktop iMacs in my Graphic Design Dept at school and use Photoshop exclusively. The school however uses PC’s in the IT Dept and all staff have been issued with a PC laptop. I absolutely hate the PC’s. They are not user friendly when it comes to using external devices and finding your way around, they get viruses which Macs do not. When I put a CD in a Mac, the icon appears on the desktop, when I do the same in a PC, I have to go to My Computer and select the external device. Give me Macs any day.

I have a PC, it’s pretty cool but not enough, so the next machine is absolutely a MAC.
April 7, 2009 5:10 pm
I use a quad core PC with 4gb of memory. I would love a mac but paying £500.00+ just for the apple logo is stupid. and don’t beleive what the Mac users say, I use my son’s Mac and they do crash.
April 7, 2009 4:57 pm
I love my Mac. I was a PC user for years. I got myself a Mac last year and would never go back to a PC.
April 7, 2009 4:55 pm
Because of work, I’ve always used PC systems. Though 20 years ago I chose MAC for my kids to grow up with, I have never regretted the decision and they are fully up-to-date MAC users and would die before giving up their MAC. Having suffered over the last three years with odd problems & MS updates going wrong I wish I had the courage to switch, at present I’m too involved in photography, but even that is starting to merge, the day will come and simplicity along with a machine that works with speed & consideration, without requiring additional software. May that day arrive sooner than later. Life is better with a MAC.

I am using a Dell XPS -M1710 laptop as my main pc. I have also built a desktop pc that I use as the main household computer.
April 7, 2009 4:15 pm
MAC MAC !!!
I have my third mac now. A MacBOOK. Had Pc earlier. And I must say Mac is the winner. No problems with it. It is just working ..!!
For me PC is not an alternative.

I use a pc at home and work. I’m a teacher and we have to lease a notebook through the education department. Mac is available but we are encouraged not to get one as the I.T. department at my school can’t support it. The report program the education department use is for pc only. Makes you wonder why they tease us with the option of getting a make doesn’t it! So I am destined to stay a pc user.
April 7, 2009 3:39 pm
Mac & PC… how can anyone work with just one platform!..lol
April 7, 2009 3:16 pm
Pretty much comes down to end user ability, Mac’s have got themselves a tidy niche as the industry standard where artistic ability called for an easy to use powerful tool. But you can’t tweak a Mac.
Macs are for people that don’t understand or don’t want to need to understand how their computer actually works. That is why they are marketed as a social movement rather than a computer (according to me lol)
If you know your way around computers you can build something that will absolutely romp the best Mac out there for half the price.

I know abot tha calibration dear Shane, but my problem still is, that I can turn/tip the screen, and the colors look different according to the angel I choose. There is also another problem, because the colors look different on the top and on the bottom of the screen. Do you know this problem ?
Best regards from

Mac all the way, baby!!
April 7, 2009 3:14 pm
I use a MacBook and I just love it
April 7, 2009 3:11 pm
Ups… forgot to tell you, that I have acces to both PC and Mac on my Imac. But I mostly use the Mac. What do not satisfy me is also, tha there is a lot of programs for photo-filter-use and photo-books, that I can not use on my Mac. Quite irritating!! Also because the Mac-solutions are offen so much more exspensive.

I use an IMac
Love the nearly virus-free solution.-
But kind of hate me screen, because it is so difficult to adjust to the right colors of my photos. I guess it is mostly becauce I can tip the screen, and do not really know, how to put it in the right position.
Best regards from

@Lotte, you might need to get a calibrator e.g. Gretag Macbeth or some other hardward calibrator. They work great!

I use three PC’s for my main Photoshop Workflow, two are running Vista and one is running Win XP. I have an eMac installed at my home running both Photoshop C3 and Lightroom 2 for editing projects. It’s running OSX Tiger. I use the eMac, even though EVERYTHING is more expensive and restrictive, because it starts EVERY time, self-heals, and I never, absolutely never, have a Blue Screen of Death. It is always stable!
April 7, 2009 2:04 pm
I have a PC I refuse to pay for Mac’s monopoly prices. I prefer PC because I can shop around for my equipment and get better for less.
April 7, 2009 1:55 pm
I use a PC, always have always will. I’ve been a graphic designer now for over 25 years and when our office started using computers around 1990, we opted to use PCs so that we could be compatible with our customers. I am totally satisfied with my PC.
April 7, 2009 1:54 pm
My dream system has always been a Mac Desktop computer and a Mac book Pro laptop.
Too bad I have champagne taste on a beer budget lol

PC. Never used MAC
April 7, 2009 1:45 pm
I use a PC notebook (Medion and Acer). I always wondered what difference there is between Mac and PC?
April 7, 2009 1:41 pm
I’m one of the poor plebs who own a PC, and will keep owning one. A Mac is just a computer after all.
April 7, 2009 1:15 pm
I have a HP PC. I really dream of a Mac, but cannot afford it right now. Maybe next year. I only have experience with a a PC but everyone tells me I need a Mac for Photography issues.
April 7, 2009 1:07 pm
PC. A Mac is too expensive.
April 7, 2009 1:06 pm
I do not have much experience on MAC. I have always used a PC. I have a Dell desktop that I love and I have had two desktops one at office place and one at home for my upgradation of new softwares and pc is good it is user friendly
April 7, 2009 12:58 pm
I use PC. When I first started out, I bought a Mac. But right after, my Dad told me he could have sent me lots of software if I had bought a PC. After a while, I noticed there was lots more software for PC’s then Mac’s. So me second computer was a PC, and I have stayed with them since. Now I have too much software to switch.
April 7, 2009 12:52 pm
I have both, a desktop PC and a Mac laptop (G4). I am happy with both, and though I do most of my work on the PC, I like the Mac because it has a very low chance of being invaded by virus.
(I know this is not possible, but I wish at least Photoshop was common for both the platforms)
