Mac or PC?

  • mac-pro-newI’ve just recently ventured out and purchased a new MAC. The last one I owned was a year or so ago (a MacBook Pro). Anyway, the time was right and I don’t mind the Mac’s so I decided to venture out and get another one.

My new Mac is much more powerful than my PC so I’ll be able to produce new Photoshop tutorials faster, as I’ll be able to render and upload videos quicker.

I’d love to hear what system you’re using whether Mac or PC.

    So what do you use?

    MAC

    or

PC (any IBM compatible machine running Windows)

Tell us below in the comments box what you use and what you really like about it or maybe even what you don’t like about your system but maybe what you’d like to have as your dream system!

Leave a comment groover... ;-)

After 40 years utilizing PC’s Dos thru XP PRO operating systems, I switched to MAC with mac os with 10.5 op system, 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad -Core Intel Xeon processor, 32GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM with ECC. I turned my hobby of many years into 2 photography businesses when I was told I may be going blind in 2006. Today with no glasses I see the whole eye chart even the bottom dot below the last letter on the right of the eye chart. I went with MaC in Nov 2008 because I was told it was Industry standard. Please understand I use to program in assembler — think, I did not know the diff between a Mac store or an Apple store.. or what a dock was on the apple. For three months with this big desk top I fought many crashes and to many anomalies to mention here. Having a post grad in physics/chem, I tend to be a little analytical; and, after three months Apple replaced my MaC desktop and renewed my apple care for another 3 years. As of April 2010, I have all the latest versions of software ( I use to program my own on the PC ) of Adobe Photoshop CS4 Suite, LR, and NIK suite, Onone software, Aperture etc… I have found the transition from PC to MAC today is questionable. Although it is a powerful machine ( really a server in all reality ) it lacks support for some of the latest technologies and also some company like HP do not provide drivers for some peripheral equipment. Much Software programming has become sloppy because of cheap availability of memory. Why was no esata installed onto this machine ? Apple would not install, but Mac store would. Although a good machine, When I have 4 TB of internal drives and 12 TB of external drives filled with pictures… The question with digital-photography becomes what is the standard going to be for file format ? Color Profiles ? 5 years from now will your raw files be readable or your DVD be “worm-holed”. I just had an External drive fail — so what if it had a 5 year warranty on the drive ? — the data to recover costs 2500$ USA — Raid or no Raid ? Bubble technology memory ? Tape drives ? What about film negatives ? interesting eh ? Son-in-law is one of top 250 electrical design engineers for Intel; and, he uses a PC with latest intel pentium chip sets. AND he still has to contend with storage of “electronic ‘digital’ media ” . So it seems to me M-Soft has caught up with Mac; and, if you say you got an apple because it does not get “viruses and bugs ” — maybe linux running machine would be the better choice… but who is writing the drivers and software for those machines. As a contractor – builder -real estate broker for 30 years, now photographer, I say this… Some people read novels, some people read the funny papers ( do they still print them ? ) More people read the funny papers than novels. So the take is fewer people will have Linux based machines, fewer MAC and even fewer will have PCs– MONEY is the issue too. Storage of your digital files…. or recovery or preserving the same is just as big an issue with the high MP cameras today.I have more money in my MAC and software than I did my whole college education — so what did I learn ? ( not counting software or nikon cameras & lenses and other photographic equipment ) !!! I will be with MAC as I am getting use to it now; and, learning more about it, although I see some compromising.
AND I can run more than one operating system on MAC desktop machine if I so inclined to do so… But the life of these machines, is probably only 3 years before they are outdated with new technology, if one is trying and can afford to keep up with technology. Enjoy taking pictures and learn the “shortcuts” on the computer. Thanks Shane PhotoZoo.com and lynda, and NAPP etc…. great people trying to help people manage their way through these changing times of photography –

I have been using PC and Mac as I went between different jobs over the last 29 years. Every time I was in a MAC workplace it felt like bliss! I now work for myself from home, and it is MAC all the way. I always say once you try a MAC you’ll never go back (to PC that is)! Cheryl

Apologies for late submission – been away!
Began on Macs back in 1985 then had to change – because only PCs where I worked.
Just changed back to a MacBookPro with Cinema screen here and in Wales (where I occasionally live) I simply connect up to whichever large monitor I am at and I have a highend set-up all the time.
    3.06Ghz 4GbRam 500HDD and 2×1Tbexternals CS4 / Aperture2/ FinalCutx4.
I would not ‘knock’ the PC platform and XPpro was the best ever. Vista has been problematic and I have no knowledge of system7.
It is great using the Mac again and I doubt very much that I will ever be persuaded to change.

I use a MAC 2.6 Ghz , 4 Gig Ram Leopard etc. Had it about 6 months and would not readily go back to a PC. Old PC had a 3.6 GigHz chip plus 4 Gig DDR2 Ram.

    1. No registry to a such to foul up – clutter and defragmenting.
    2. No hard disc defragging needed.
    3. RAM is used on what you are using at the time.

It the same sped now as 6 months ago – Ive checked.
Its so easy to load new software and remove it.
Oh yes – its very very quick.
Oh yes – anti virus is still NOT needed – see Mac Forums.

Downside is that its about twice the price than the equivalent PC, but the included software is not to bad for starters.

Im a convert to the Dark Side…
CS3 enthusiastic amateur photographer. Elements was brilliant and flew effortlessly.

When I was in design school we learned on Mac’s but I use a pc in my home studio. I have them built for me so that I get only what I want and lots of room for storing all those design files. I’ve had very few problems, most of which are easily resolved, accept when I need more memory. Love my 22″ monitor too . . .

I have a PC and a Mac Book Pro laptop. Of the two, I prefer the Mac because now I can have both on one machine. With my Mac I’m currently running XP Pro on my Mac which I believe is good since I use MS Office 2007 which I consider is the best product MS has launched. I use Excel extensively and all I have to do is reboot to Windows and thats that!

I have recently switched to a Mac. Why ? because after two successive PCS (Acer XP and Toshiba Vista) I am done with the constant crashes and poor performance.
However, I am less than convinced with the Mac…. :( Sure it has not yet crashed on me (and that is worth a lot to me) BUT:
    - I hate the fact that there is no workspace in the Mac, so when Photoshop is open, you can see all the windows open behind. I find it very distracting, and it means that many more steps to drag the window ove rthe desktop to cover everything up.
    - I cannot believe there is no maximize button in the Mac so that a window expands to full screen!!!
    - I work with 2 screens: on one screen I used to work with a simple windows explorer with my image thumbnails (impossible to recreate in Mac) I would then drag a thumbnail from that screen to my PS workspace to openb the image for editing. Impossible again to do in Mac. You need to drag to the icon in the dock- much less easy.

SO YES I like the Mac bcs it does not crash, but it falls short BIG TIME compared to Windows.

AM I THE ONLY ONE, OR ARE THE REST OF YOU TOO PROUD TO ADMIT ?????????????

    Thanks for your feedback…

I was a PC user for many years up until 18 months ago when I bought a Mac… I have to say I love it!!! I would now never own a PC again, it is Mac all the way for me. It is so much easier to operate than a PC and so much quicker. I {heart} my Mac ;)

Have been a Mac user since their inception and would never use a PC – no ICC’s on PC’s and the graphics are no where near as good – and most important – never get viruses like the PC world have continuously.
    MACS RULE AND ALWAYS WILL!!!!!

I use Macs, and have since 1989. In fact, just last year, in 2008, did my first Mac (the one I bought in 1989) finally give up the ghost.

Currently I use a Mac Pro with a 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Xeon processor and more than 1TB of storage. Pictures take up a LOT of space… :)

I use a Dell PC and a Dell laptop. The PC now has a Vista platform so several plug ins don’t work like my embroidery machine. For my family photos the PC is just fine, however I hear Mac is better for professional photography.
